Gigantic (2008)

Dir. Matt Aselton

  • Paul Dano
  • Zooey Deschanel
  • John Goodman
  • Zack Galifianakis

Gigantic is a 2009 independent comedy film directed by Matt Aselton and starring Paul Dano, Zooey Deschanel, John Goodman, Edward Asner and Jane Alexander. The script, written by Aselton and his college friend Adam Nagata, tells of Brian (Dano), a mattress salesman who wishes to adopt a baby from China but is sidetracked when he meets the quirky, wealthy Harriet (Deschanel). The story was based on Aselton’s childhood wish for his parents to adopt a Chinese baby, and the film was shot in New York and Connecticut. It had its world premiere at 2008’s Toronto International Film Festival and was released in the United States on April 3, 2009. (wikipedia.org)

When I first watched this movie, I loved how confident every character seemed to be about their lives. Brian and Harriet both hit it off immediately and their characters just seem to match in the quirky ways that their personalities do. I really loved the acting especially from John Goodman and Zooey Deschanel, her somewhat not knowing demeanor really is stunning in this film. However, while this film contained many beautiful scenes and a great display of dysfunction in family life, I really didn’t understand why Zack Galifianakis portrayed a homeless man out to kill Brian. There was no back story to that at all and it seemed totally out of place. 6.5/10.
